Creating a dinner set for Kawakawa Hut and sooo enjoyed playing with shapes, clays and glazes to create something that fits Chanel and Brent’s vision.

This is the plate that serves as inspiration for what I am making for the hut but also a new direction in my work that I am very keen to explore more.

A buff clay (who would have thought I’d ever move away from white clay) and white glaze, applied to create different layers and a look that appears much more relaxed, compared with some of my other works.
Same goes for the rim of the plate and the foot it stands on, showing the signs of my hands, fingertips, tools and sponges I used in the process.

Seeing other people hold this plate, it gives me great satisfaction to watch them explore the rugged edges, how the plate gets turned to reveal the foot, how it’s held into the light to let the layers of glaze catch the light. It’s a joy to see how tactile only this one plate is. Imagine a whole dinner set with plates, bowls and cups in the same clay and glaze.

I am very much looking forward to seeing all of those pieces coming together before they head out to Kawakawa Road.
